Cool (and Stylin’) Way to Reduce Light Pollution

While on a star gazing (and mind boggling) adventure at Utah’s very own Antelope Island, I recently learned that these types of light fixtures help to reduce light pollution! Cool little tid bit ay!? Yeah, I was glad to hear of it also. I took a picture of one indoors so that you could better see the style. My old school camera lacks some detail on the exterior photo.

But the style is what counts because light is directed downward. An informative demonstration was conducted showing the difference between these and other light fixtures. The style in the photo still offers enough light without directing it up, which reduces light pollution.

Antelope Island happens to be a major and very important stopping point for migrating birds. This particular seminar was showing how such a simple thing can go far to reduce light pollution in helping migrating birds and us. Never forget that people experience the detrimental effects of light pollution too, and is one more way we have drifted further from the natural beings that we are meant to be.

So, good for people, good for other species, that sounds like a win-win to me. It’s not just my bias, but I happen to really like the looks of this style, and I had been noticing it whilst out and about. It has an antique-look and reminds me of the slower and simpler times that we all remember with fondness.

I was glad to hear about this little tip, a small, yet significant way in which everyone can chip in and help, so I thought you would like it also.

Enjoy those stars!

“Now that is far; true mileage. Mileeg! Mileeg on Saturdee.
